Guinea

Title: Guinea

Tier: 1

Type: country

A military coup in 2021 that deposed then-President Condé was the latest in a series of unfortunate setbacks to Guinea’s stumbling progress toward democracy. After decades of autocracy and corruption, elections in 2010 and 2015 brought hope for change. Then the President changed the constitution to give himself additional terms beyond his term limit. Massive protests over this change, and over the controversial election in 2020, were met with ruthless suppression. Less than a year later, after a food crisis and a fuel hike, the military had arrested Condé and seized power, to the delight of many Guineans. The long-term outcomes from the coup remain unclear. Currently, the Christian minority and the missionary community have the freedom to share the blessed hope of Christ to a nation long-plagued by poverty, corruption, and uncertainty. May they seize this opportunity with confidence and faith – the people of Guinea are desperate for hope.

Christians make up a small minority of the population. Most live in Conakry and the southeast forests. The Church declined around 15 years ago. Evangelism and church planting slowed down, and less-committed Christians left the faith. Guinea has 3 Bible schools and 6 leadership training schools, but still lacks Christian leaders. 43% of the population are under age 15. Pray for believers who will persevere, and pray against the enemy who seeks to destroy young or weak Christians before they can grow.
